Is iKydz the 'Bargain of the Century'?
Smartphone policies hike up boarding school admissions
St. Columba’s College, just off the M50 on Dublin’s southside, is Ireland’s most expensive fee-paying school, costing almost €23,000 for senior boarders (and that doesn’t include pocket money etc.). That, by anyone’s measure, is a lot of money.
"What are the smartphone policies?"
In this Irish Times article, the school principal, Mark Boobbyer, says that the “number one” question asked by parents was the school’s policy on smartphone use. Boarding students, he said, were allowed access to phones only in their dorms (this is no different than them accessing phones from home) and they were taken away from younger students at night.
“It’s on parents’ mind all the time because, in a sense, they feel they are fighting a losing battle,” he said. “Maybe day pupils can be on their phones or Playstations when they go home . . . for boarders, there simply isn’t time for wasting on screens. So, most parents are quite happy with that.”
And, as you can see from the rest of the article many other schools report the exact same thing, parents understandably concerned about their kids spending hours and hours stuck on digital devices. But you don’t have to spend what is near the average industrial wage (that’s an after-tax figure) to keep just one of your children kids away from their phones and tablets.
Another solution for parents
iKydz was created by ‘ordinary’ parents to address the exact same problem, but for less than 0.5% of the cost quoted for many of our boarding schools.
One thing we noticed about the Irish Times article is that there’s no mention made of what happens when the kids come home from school (holidays and weekends make up nearly half the year after all) and whether, having been curtailed online in school, that they choose to binge on the internet at home, when school rules don’t apply?
iKydz rules apply always, morning, noon and importantly, at night.
Parents told us about their kids watching inappropriate material when they are away from home. So, concerned parents that we are, we created the iKydz enabled smartphone, where the same iKydz rules, as set down by parents, apply.
iKydz is the perfect solution to parents who are worried about too much screen time.
If you choose to send your child to boarding school and then you are worried about their exposure to inappropriate content when they return for holidays, iKydz is the answer for you.
One simple device and a once off payment of €99 will give you peace of mind knowing that your child is not being exposed to any content you do not wish for them to see / use.
