Is iKydz the ‘Bargain of the Century’?

Smartphone policies hike up boarding school admissions

St. Columba’s College, just off the M50 on Dublin’s southside, is Ireland’s most expensive fee-paying school, costing almost €23,000 for senior boarders (and that doesn’t include pocket money etc.). That, by anyone’s measure, is a lot of money.

“What are the smartphone policies?”distraction

In this Irish Times article, the school principal, Mark Boobbyer, says that the “number one” question asked by parents was the school’s policy on smartphone use. Boarding students, he said, were allowed access to phones only in their dorms (this is no different than them accessing phones from home) and they were taken away from younger students at night.

“It’s on parents’ mind all the time because, in a sense, they feel they are fighting a losing battle,” he said. “Maybe day pupils can be on their phones or Playstations when they go home . . . for boarders, there simply isn’t time for wasting on screens. So, most parents are quite happy with that.”

And, as you can see from the rest of the article many other schools report the exact same thing, parents understandably concerned about their kids spending hours and hours stuck on digital devices. But you don’t have to spend what is near the average industrial wage (that’s an after-tax figure) to keep just one of your children kids away from their phones and tablets.

Another solution for parents

iKydz was created by ‘ordinary’ parents to address the exact same problem, but for less than 0.5% of the cost quoted for many of our boarding schools.

One thing we noticed about the Irish Times article is that there’s no mention made of what happens when the kids come home from school (holidays and weekends make up nearly half the year after all) and whether, having been curtailed online in school, that they choose to binge on the internet at home, when school rules don’t apply?

iKydz rules apply always, morning, noon and importantly, at night.

Parents told us about their kids watching inappropriate material when they are away from home. So, concerned parents that we are, we created the iKydz enabled smartphone, where the same iKydz rules, as set down by parents, apply.

Age Based Restrictions

Apply age-based restrictions to your kids’ internet connected devices with one easy click. You wouldn’t want your 6 year old seeing things that your 15 year old is allowed to watch. So use our standard age-based restrictions to give you peace of mind. Simply apply the appropriate restriction to your kid’s device, according to their age and you don’t have to worry again about what your 6 year old is seeing on the internet. By applying a loose restriction to your 15 year old’s device, they get to see what want to on the internet, but you still have the option of reducing the amount of time that they spend online. Maybe there’s a big exam coming up and focus on study is not what it should be…

Block Apps

Use our standard blocks to prevent or limit access to social media, chat rooms or other apps, such as Instagram, Facebook, Yellow, Simsimi, Tinder, WhatsApp and a host of others. When we discover an unsavoury app that kids might be tempted to use, we put it on our list and give you the option of blocking it. Our lists are updated by us and you will always receive these updates at no additional cost.

Shut Off The Internet

Do you ever wish that the kids would focus on dinner or a family game without internet distractions? Use our Mealtime button to shut down all your kids’ Internet access for 30 minutes. Just enough time for them to eat their dinner and maybe even have a conversation with you!

Block Websites

Use our iKydz Global Block Lists to block content such as Adult, Gaming, Violence & Gambling. These lists are updated automatically by us so you never have to worry. You can also block social media and other sites and apply these block lists to specific devices.

We believe all parents should have open communication with their kids and your family’s Internet Activity report is a great starting point to help identify often wasted hours spent online.

Block Pop-Ups
