What is Roblox?
Roblox is an online game where players create Avatars, join virtual worlds, play games and chat to friends. However, Roblox can be dangerous to your child’s online safety. Roblox games are user generated, meaning that the virtual worlds within Roblox are created by the young user fan base.
Why is Roblox dangerous for children?
Because of a lack of adequate moderation of these user generated worlds, children are often exposed to violent shoot and kill game play, horror games, and other inappropriate virtual behaviours. Roblox has been ridiculed for its lack of safety for children against online predators. In an article by the Daily Mail Online, two mothers share their experience with Roblox and online predatory behaviour on the app. Shannon Mitchell from Sydney shares how her child received inappropriate messages when playing on Roblox. Although Roblox makes an effort to tackle these safety concerns, it is still extremely easy for predators to target young children on online games such as Roblox.
On Commonsensemedia.org, parents have expressed their concerns and experiences with inappropriate content on Roblox. One person says;
“An 11 year old I know was propositioned on here, she said no and her online Roblox character was picked up and thrown into the bed…can I call this online rape? A different day she was in the hotel and some roblox guy appeared in her shower. When I found this out, the account was cancelled.”
